What is a Local Plan?

Local Plans are at the heart of the planning system and are the main consideration in deciding planning applications. They set the framework in which decisions on particular proposals are taken locally.

History of the Local Plan

The first Coventry Local Plan in the 21st century   was adopted in 2001, this covering the period 1996 to 2011.

In 2004 work began on a new plan, now to be called a Core Strategy. After much opposition to Greenbelt Land being taken for housing this plan was approved by the inspector in 2010. However, due to political changes within the City Council it was withdrawn in July 2010.

Work started on a new Core Strategy in 2011, but this time the inspector dis not approve the document. It was withdrawn in 2013.

The current Local Plan

Work on the current plan started in 2014. Again there was opposition to Greenbelt Land being taken for housing.

The public examination hearing sessions with the inspector took place between July 2016 and January 2017.

The Local Plan was finally adopted on 6th December 2017 and covers the period 2011 - 2031.

A review of the Local Plan is likely to take place in 2021. Opposition to Greenbelt Land being taken for housing still exists, this being based upon the high housing number contained  within the plan.
